Speech Evaluator

Feedback is key to the Toastmasters process, helping development of communication and leadership skills. That’s why we’re here!

Toastmasters uses the “sandwich” technique. First make positive comments, then suggestions for improvement, then finish with an encouraging comment.

Don’t be reluctant to critique – we can take it – we’re expecting it. It is your perspective as an audience member – it’s valid. Sometimes we may be too easy on speakers.

Don’t be all negative, but don’t be all positive either.

Some things to watch for:

• Did the speaker use the opening protocol?
• Did their speech have structure with a clear introduction, body and conclusion?
• Did they make good eye contact and avoid looking too much at their notes?
• Did they speak with enough volume and use vocal variety rather than a monotone?
• Did they have good body language – posture, gestures, avoid hand clasping and foot shuffling?

Consider the specific objectives of the speech per the CC manual. Don’t focus too much on the content of the speech – only comment on whether material was a good fit for the objectives. It is not evaluator’s role to agree or disagree with what the speaker said, but rather to comment on HOW they said it.

Address the group not individual. The evaluation is for benefit of whole group so don’t say “Henry you made really good eye contact.” Say “Did you notice how Henry scanned the room making eye contact with everyone?” You can also demonstrate what the speaker did well.

In conclusion:

• Consider the objective of the speaker’s project or the role.
• Comment on how they say it not what the say.
• Use the sandwich technique – but make sure there is some meat in the sandwich.
